The only lighthouse that does not shine its light out to sea. When the lantern of the disused beacon on Memmert was dismantled in 1986, an interest group came together to save the “Memmert fire”. However, the beacon is not allowed to direct its light towards the North Sea and the Wadden Sea, as this was not permitted by the Lower Saxony Port Authority. Nevertheless, the Juister population and also the guests wanted a tower for the beacon. This tower was then built at the harbor entrance for the beacon. Since the light from the Memmert fire is not allowed to be used for shipping, it can be seen along the length of the island. It reminds us of the time when it showed the way to sailors far out at sea. It was only possible to build the tower for the Memmert fire through generous donations from islanders and guests. The Memmert fire on Juist was inaugurated at the lighting festival on December 29, 1992. Since then, the beacon has shined over Juist every 13 seconds. In the summer months the lighthouse can be climbed for a small fee of €1.00.

Until the early 1990s, Juist did not have its own lighthouse. This was not necessary for safe shipping. The lighting on the neighboring islands of Borkum and Norderney was sufficient for safe navigation on the East Frisian North Sea coast. Some interest groups advocated that the neighboring Memmert lighthouse (the bird protection island of Memmert) should be moved to Juist after severe damage. Completely dismantled in 1986 and initially stored in the seaport city of Emden, it was rebuilt on Juist in the following years.
The well-known attraction right at the harbor is not an official maritime nautical mark. It was built under the condition that its light should only shine into the village center.
Great photo opportunity 📸 and really invites you on a maritime visit if you've docked on the ferry.⚓️💙
