The building, which is referred to here as a lighthouse, is the crossbrand fire "Red Cliff". The octagonal brick building is no longer in operation, but still belongs to the most famous landmarks of the island. Since 2012, the cross-brand fire shines through a comprehensive renovation in a new light.

Make sure to take the short gravel path up to the tower with you, from there it is only a few steps and you will be rewarded with a great view over the dunes, the beach and the North Sea.

In 1912, a small brick lighthouse with a Pintsch lantern was erected on the dunes north of the village of Kampen on the island of Sylt. The small tower was put into operation in 1913 and, with a fixed fire and white, red and green sectors, served as a cross-branding fire for the west coast of the island of Sylt. The brick building was octagonal, the lantern has the domed roof typical of this era.

The purpose of this lighthouse was to replace a red sector in the large Kampen lighthouse just a few hundred meters away, which could then only be used as a sea fire. With the cross-brand fire, a light barrel and thus the Lister Deep north of the elbow could be determined.

Initially, the lighthouse, which was switched off again during the First World War - i.e. only a few months after its commissioning - was operated with petroleum. In 1936 the fire was switched to incandescent light (as with the Lister lighthouses) and strengthened. Most recently, the fire had the identifier Oc (4), 15 s.

In 1975 the responsible authorities finally saw no further use in the tower and put the fire off. However, the municipality of Kampen bought it the following year and received it as a monument, even though the tower no longer has any optics. Today a small boardwalk leads from a dune path to the tower. The structure can be illuminated at night by spotlights and will therefore also have its place on the dunes near Kampen in the future. It was not until 1993 that the small lighthouse was extensively renovated.

It should also be mentioned that this lighthouse is now being produced as an excellent 1:87 scale model by the Dutch company Artitec.

The old lighthouse is out of service, but very nicely renovated

The octagonal lighthouse Red Cliff stands at the northern end of the Red Cliff northwest of Kampen on the island of Sylt.

The lighthouse was built in 1912 and 1913 as a cross fire to warn of a sandbar in the entrance to the Lister Deep to have a supplement for the main fire (Kampen). The verklinkerte tower put into operation in 1913 is the earliest concrete tower on German coasts. It is about 2.5 km northwest of the beacon Kampen. The electrification of the fire took place in 1936. Until the shutdown of the tower in 1974, the fire was monitored by the lighthouse keepers of the large tower in Kampen. After the beacon was extinguished, took over the beacon in Kampen his job with a red sector. Without the beacon and only as a day sight, the tower is now owned by the municipality Kampen and is entertained by her.

In 2005, when working on the removal of a steel barrow, the 3.5 meter high and approximately 20-tonne erratic foundling from the Red Cliff was found. The one billion year old stone comes from a Scandinavian mountain range.
