The moated castle Metternich (Schloss Merle) was built in the 13th century at the latest. In 1316, a family was first mentioned that bore the name Metternich and had the lion as its coat of arms.

In the village of Metternich, which belongs to Swisttal, there is the moated castle of the same name. However, the sparkling wine of the same name was not available here :-)

The impressive moated castle from the beginning of the 14th century is only separated from the town of Metternich by the Swistbach, right at the edge of the forest. The large water areas and gardens around the castle have a special atmosphere.
