The “Mercado Ferreira Borges” is located diagonally across from the stock exchange, not quite as ostentatious but no less interesting. The metal construction built between 1885 and 1888 by the architect João Carlos Machado as a market hall was only used for a short time for its originally intended purpose.
In the course of history it was threatened with demolition, served as a garage, soup kitchen, greenhouse and finally, in 1939, as a fruit market.
In 1978 the “Mercado” was closed and left to decay for five years, until in 1983 the decision was made to restore the imposing building in order to establish a cultural center in it.
After renewed renovation, the “HardClub” moved here in 2010, an ambitious organizer of cultural events of all kinds with a focus on music of all styles.
