The St. Hermes Crypt is undoubtedly the centerpiece of the city! A crypt is a typical element of Romanesque-Gothic architecture and is used to store the relics of a saint. In Ronse this was Saint Hermes, who was invoked for nervous and mental illnesses.

St. Hermes is depicted as a Roman officer on horseback. His life-size equestrian statue stands above the shrine in the Basilica of St. Hermes. In the crypt, you can get an impression of how pilgrims in search of healing were treated. The 11th century crypt was rebuilt and enlarged. Believe it or not, it has 32 pillars, making it the largest in Western Europe.

During a tour you will not only get an insight into the building history of the crypt, but you will also learn more about the different phases of the treatment of pilgrims in search of healing.
