A long, long time ago - to be precise from 1549 to 1625, this 13th-century church was the tallest building in the world.
The gigantic, 159 meters high tower was probably intended as an orientation for arriving ships, but involuntarily became a lightning rod. Throughout history, the tower was hit by lightning and burned down three times.

The assertion made by various authorities that the church was the tallest building in the world between 1549 and 1625, with an allegedly 159 meter high tower, is based on a mistake. In fact, the height of the church tower built in 1549 was according to new estimates at 115 to 125 meters, so similar to today's tower.

The Olai Church towers over Toompea Hill. Because of the magnificent view over Tallinn, a visit to the tower is recommended, even if you have to climb 258 steps on a narrow spiral staircase.
