The Ahrdorf-Blankenheim Wald railway line was designed as a supplementary line to the southern connection from Dümpelfeld via Lissendorf to Losheim and, given the difficult and remote terrain, it was complex and expensive. After the approval in 1909, construction work began on April 1, 1910. Along the route, numerous bridges (including the four-arched Freilingen Viaduct) overpasses and underpasses, three tunnels and several rock cuttings up to 30 meters deep had to be built.
