The list of Lauf castle estates from 1275 mentions the “Mühle am Markt” and three other mills here on the Pegnitz for the first time. At that time the place was not yet fortified - the city wall was only built after 1355.In 1380 it can be read: "... the grinding mill gives the mill 3 fl (florenus aureus = guilders), 1 FH (carnival hen) and the city of Lauf 60 Pfg." The grinder therefore paid taxes (“interest”) to the Mauermühle , this in turn was a fiefdom of the castle and was obliged to make corresponding payments. In 1541, the grinding mill was specifically mentioned together with the Mauermühle (which no longer exists today): “Near the water gate is Michael Nider's grinding mill (5 grinding wheels) “in the walls”, open to the city through a small door. The mill house with grinder and a stable are surrounded by walls. (...) The mill also includes 1 grinding wheel, which drives 3 stones. The owners pay interest into the mill. Millers and grinders each have a key to their wicket door.”altstadtfreunde-lauf.de/de/2-gehenswuerdigkeiten/2b-reichelsche-schleif

On a small island in the Pegnitz is already mentioned in 1541 and operated until 1988 grinding mill. The water power is transferred from the mill wheel directly to a large grindstone - without electricity. Today it is only used for museum purposes: knives and axes brought with you can be sharpened during a guided tour.
