In the Federal Republic of Germany and beyond the borders of our state, the Essen cinema is known and famous. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that the Lichtburg is a premiere cinema and, on the other hand, because this film theater has the largest cinema hall in Germany. This jewel with 1250 seats is located in the middle of Essen's inner city and continues to cast a spell over cinema fans. The film theater also offers space for a stage behind the roll-up screen, so that the hall can also be used for theater and cabaret events. The building is a historical monument. In the basement of the building there is another cinema hall with 150 seats. The Lichtburg Film Theater in Essen opened on October 18, 1928. The cinema is an early example of the "Aryanization" of Jewish property during the National Socialist era in Germany. As early as 1933/1934, the Jewish operator, Berlin publisher, entrepreneur and co-founder of German film publishing Karl Wolffsohn was killed by massive pressure from the NSDAP in Essen -Gauleiter Josef Terboven was forced to sell the cinema to Universum Film AG, far below its value.

Since 2006, a commemorative plaque on the Lichtburg has commemorated Karl Wolffsohn. It was unveiled in the presence of the grandson, the historian Michael Wolffsohn. He is also the head of the Lichtburg Foundation. in Berlin with a German-Turkish-Jewish cultural center.

Go to the cinema in style - that's what the Lichtburg Essen offers in the heart of the city center. With 1250 seats and a smaller hall (150 seats), it is not only the largest cinema palace in Germany, but also one of the most beautiful cinemas. Here you don't just go to the cinema, you visit a film palace with an eventful history and memories of the glamor of bygone times.

The Lichtburg Essen was built in 1928 in the New Objectivity style. In its early days, it had an audience capacity of 2,000 people and folding seating. In addition, what was then the largest cinema organ in Europe was installed. In 1943 the film palace was badly damaged, but the facade survived. Immediately after the end of the war, the Essen cinema industry campaigned for the reconstruction of the film theatre, which was redesigned in the style of the time and reopened in 1950.

During the 1950s and 1960s, national and international cinema celebrities came to Germany's most important premiere cinema: Zarah Leander, Romy Schneider, Heinz Rühmann, Curd Jürgens, Buster Keaton and Gary Cooper attended the premieres of their films. At the same time, the Lichtburg was also used for music events. This is how Louis Armstrong, Count Basie and Juliette Gréco performed. With the advent of television and later the multiplex cinemas, many cinemas in the Ruhr area closed - the Lichtburg Essen, however, survived with support from politics and society.
