The former Lost Place is now a tourism highlight with street signs, a new big parking lot and an entry in the "Lonely planet" Travelguide. How this world changes...
Nevertheless worth the hike! ;-)
In the middle of the vast black sand of Sólheimasandur lies the wreck of an airplane that has been resting here since 1973, when it had to make an emergency landing after an engine failure.
There is an air of mystery surrounding this old airplane. For decades it remained an almost forgotten place where only the wind and birds came to visit. But over the years, and especially after 2000, the airplane wreck became one of Iceland's most popular tourist destinations. Pop icons such as Justin Bieber and Bollywood stars such as Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol have chosen this mysterious place for their videos, which has certainly contributed to its growing popularity.
Your journey begins at the Eyvindarholt Hill House and the Cabins, from where you can reach the parking lot near the wreck in about half an hour. But be careful! The hike to the wreck is about 4 kilometers and can take up to three hours. You will be enveloped by the vastness of the sand and the haunting atmosphere of the place.
While today's hiking trail is clearly signposted and the wreck is listed in the "Lonely Planet", the place with its history and the black sand desert all around remains an impressive experience. However, you should be prepared for a long walk and ideally set off there in the early morning hours or late in the evening to really enjoy the peace and solitude of the place.
The plane wreck at night, especially in combination with the glowing northern lights, is an unforgettable sight and a photographer's dream. But even during the day it offers a bizarre backdrop that will captivate you.
