This monument will be placed near the lock complex. With this, Nieuwpoort wishes to express its gratitude to a group of brave soldiers of whom 1162 died in the first 2 years of WW1 while safeguarding the lock complex and preserving the inundation. An urn containing earth (Terre d'Amis) from Senegal, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, France and Nieuwpoort will be placed in the monument.
