    The history of Antonigartzem

The building has an interesting history!

In 1352, Emmerich von Gertzen donated a chapel with an apartment for 3 clerics near his castle, consecrated to St. Antonius Eremita. In the same year he was awarded an indulgence by the Cologne auxiliary bishop.
Another indulgence followed in 1357 and the founder's widow made further donations in 1366, and the nuns soon left the monastery, which was only re-founded in 1474 by Hubert von Gertzen and occupied by Franciscan monks. The monastery church, consecrated in 1500, is still preserved, even if it is now in a rather dilapidated state. In the beginning of the 16th century the Franciscan monks also left the monastery, to which Wierich von Gertzen now called Franciscan nuns from Mariaweiler in 1520.
The monastery was reportedly burned down in 1642 and 1673.
It was not until 1681 that the nuns were able to move back into the newly built monastery with the help of Arnold von Wachtendonk, Herr zu Gartzem. The remaining residential buildings seem to belong to this building.
In 1704 the monastery was accepted into the Premonstratensian order, whose supervision the monastery had been under since the middle of the 17th century at the latest.
The extensive farm buildings were built in the course of the 18th century. When the monastery was sold in 1804, it was acquired by the owner of the castle, Baron von Syberg; in 1843 it was owned by Messrs Floren and Barons von Negri; In 1892 Antonigartzem was sold to Honorary Mayor Schick in Enzen.
The monastery, church and farm buildings enclose a large rectangular courtyard and are about 50 meters wide and 80 meters long. The oldest part, the church, consecrated in 1500, occupies the eastern half of the north side, it is a single-aisled building with a clearance of about 7 by 14 meters.

The castle was the ancestral seat of the Lords of Gertzen, who were named as early as 1237, and was supposedly located near the Antonigartzem monastery, which they founded. The castle came to Kornelius von Binsfeld through marriage in 1554 and, after a lengthy process, to von Wachtendonk in the first half of the 17th century; after the destruction in 1642 the castle was not rebuilt.
Around 1730 a Herr von Martial became a co-owner through Subhastation, until the estate was bought by von Syberg around 1755.
When the last owner, Baron von Syberg, acquired the Antonigartzem monastery in 1804, the dilapidated remains of the former castle were completely removed.
Today the old monastery is privately owned. The entire complex has been restored and shines in its old splendor ...

The old monastery complex is privately owned. A small pond next door with benches is great for a rest.

A former monastery and Weier is interesting. The nearby Krewelshof is only for Giris
