Chestnuts don't stand a chance anymore (07/29/2019)
Mechernich-Wachendorf - The chestnut avenue in Wachendorf will no longer be a chestnut avenue in the long run. This is the result of a citizens' information event at which the district of Euskirchen and the city of Mechernich have informed the villagers about the future plans for the avenue.
"Most of you still know the avenue in a healthy state," said Mayor Theo Wolfgarten towards the around 40 visitors. But everything has been different for eleven years: in 2008, the leaf miner attacked the chestnuts, and about five years later, bacteria and fungi were added. The sick horse chestnut trees became ailing on the inside, broke off or were felled, most recently only in spring.

This beautiful avenue leads us straight to Wachendorf Castle.

The castle is very picturesquely situated on the outskirts of Wachendorf in the North Eifel. It was built at the end of the 18th century and is still surrounded by former fortifications and moats. A long chestnut avenue leads halfway around the village to the castle. The castle is privately owned. You can get married here at the registry office or rent it as an unusual wedding location.
