This Dutch motorsailer built in 1896 is a historic type of flat-bottomed sailing ship specially designed for the Wadden Sea and called a tjalk. The Angela von Barßel was restored in 1985/86. You can book excursions and special trips with the museum ship.

The museum ship has an eventful history: the Tjalk, built in the Netherlands in 1896, was supposed to be scrapped when the Barßel captain Johannes Berkenheger discovered it in the Bremen harbor in 1984. Berkenheger brought the old ship to Barßel. A specially founded association restored the old Tjalk in painstaking detail until 1986. 20 years later the "Angela von Barßel" was restored again and equipped with the latest technology. The "Angela von Barßel" was overtaken at the Siemer shipyard in Elisabethfehn. In addition to a new preservation of the underwater hull, a bow thruster was installed, which facilitates maneuvering in narrow waters. A digital radar system, GPS, chart plotter and sonar device complete the equipment. The old 55 HP engine was replaced by a 125 HP marine diesel with six cylinders. The association had to spend a good 71,000 euros on the restoration. Sponsors from the population and business as well as public funding made the work possible.

The old Tjalk with its large leeboards, which are intended to prevent the flat-bottomed ship from drifting, has been a frequent guest at maritime events for more than 20 years. On the Ems, Elbe and Weser, people know the ship with the striking view.

If now even the smallest ladybug that has fallen into the harbor Barssels is presented here as a highlight, then I am angry. But so a nicely preserved flat bottom boat, which is atmospheric in the harbor.
