"... The Hahnenfurth pit is a limestone quarry in the Upper Devonian mass limestone in the west of Wuppertal in the Vohwinkel district on the border with Wülfrath.

The quarry near Hahnenfurth to the west and east of Dornap is named after the location of Hahnenfurth. The Düsseldorfer Straße, which is classified as Bundesstraße 7, runs north of the pit, south of the Hahnenfurth dump. The Hahnenfurth mine and the Hanielsfeld mine in the west are separated from the railway line of the Wuppertal-Vohwinkel – Essen-Überruhr line, which is served by the S 9 S-Bahn line. The two pits are connected by a tunnel below the railway line.

The pit measures around 1000 meters in the west-east extension and around 900 meters in the north-south extension (this refers to the area that is closed to the public). The mine is operated by Rheinkalk GmbH Werk Dornap (with company headquarters in Wülfrath). The water level is around 110 meters below ground level in the area (based on Hahnenfurth, which is around 145 meters above zero).

In order to secure lime mining at the site for the next few decades, it was decided to expand the open pit to the south. As a first measure, the course of the federal road 7 was relocated in 1996 from the former southern edge of the pit to the northern edge in front of the spoil dump. This made this area free for dismantling. The burning operation of the Dornap lime works was relocated to the Flandersbach lime works, so that the works south of the former route of the main road could be closed and released for demolition. This area will then also be used for mining. By autumn 2012, several of the works' buildings and their siding on the Düsseldorf-Derendorf-Dortmund Süd railway line had already been demolished. ... "

The pit measures about 1000 meters in the west-east extension and about 900 meters in the north-south extension (meaning here the area that is closed to the public). The water level is about 110 meters below the ground level of the environment (based on Hahnenfurth, which is about 145 meters above zero).
