Colditz Castle

The magnificent Renaissance castle has a multifaceted and sometimes horrific history: it was first mentioned in a marriage certificate from 1046. At that time, King Henry III. the castle of his wife Agnes of Poitou. In later centuries it was used as a hunting lodge, a farmhouse for beggars and tramps, and a sanatorium for the hereditary and mentally ill.
