Until the middle of the 18th century, the zoo was used as a game reserve and as a hunting ground, primarily by the Wettin rulers. A whole range of different types of hunting are presented on the explanatory boards, from baiting to suspended game hunting, bear hunting with nets and songbird catching.

Established in 1523 by Elector Friedrich the Wise as a game reserve and after several expansions
1624 fenced in by Elector Johann Georg I with a 7 km long wall (remains of the wall are still preserved today)
mid 18th century ended its use as an electoral hunting ground.
