The Wehr Hannover-Herrenhausen, consisting of the 1913 built so-called state weir (with three 10m-military body) and built in 1956 as a substitute for a failed needle weir so-called urban weir (with two 25m-Wehrkörpern), serves the navigability of the line and Ihme in City of Hannover, the flood protection of the city of Hannover and the industrial water supply of some industrial companies in the city of Hannover.
The weir control, power supply and the individual drives for three 10 m weir body with attached fish belly flap was renewed in 1952. In 1956, the two 25 m weir units with their drives were built and connected to the control and power supply.
A 10 m defense field (field I) of the State Forces was provided in 1997 for the construction of a Herrenhausen hydroelectric power plant and since 1999 has been used to generate electricity for the city of Hannover.
