The fountain was the winner in a competition between eleven artists and was selected by the art commission of the city of Wuppertal. It was designed and built by the Düsseldorf sculptor Friedrich Werthmann (1927-2018). When the Astropfad Wuppertal was set up in 1988, the fountain served as the sun and thus as the center for the planets in the solar system
