Since pure wild species are rather unsuitable for our climate, the breeding of hybrids began at the beginning of the 19th century, primarily to increase winter hardiness. Rhododendrons generally need relatively high humidity, cool summers and mild winters. Mountain slopes and cool, humid locations are also beneficial for the rhododendrons.
The high precipitation also has a positive effect, as it washes the Kal from the soil and results in a low pH of 4.5 - 5.5, which is optimal for rhododendrons.
Rhododendrons are the design theme in the park, both in the large-scale, backdrop-forming use of Rhododenron catawbiense and other hybrids, as well as in the effect as a single, special flowering variety in the rododendron collection.
Rhododendrons are woody plants from the genus of the heather family (Ericaceae family). The main distribution area is in East Asia and North America. With a great diversity of species (1000), they are now spread over the entire northern hemisphere.
