Reconstruction of the street began shortly after the Second World War. The connection between the neighborhoods Mitte and Friedrichshain, originally called Große Frankfurter Straße, was in the Soviet occupation zone. With an appeal in the daily newspaper "Neues Deutschland" workers for the "National Development Program Berlin" were sought. After all, socialism had to live somewhere.
