Erected by the Arabs during the 8th and 9th centuries as a defensive enclave (to guard the dirt roads that linked Sintra to Lisbon, Cascais and Mafra) and conquered in the 12th century by the Christians of Don Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, still it preserves two Romanesque gates and some frescoes from the old medieval necropolis.
