The Great Synagogue, built in 1893 in a Moorish-Romanesque style, is the third largest in Europe (and the fifth largest in the world). It is a testament to the rich Jewish community in Pilsen, which unfortunately was almost wiped out during the Nazi occupation in 1939-1945. The historic building was extensively reconstructed at the end of the 20th century and, thanks to its excellent acoustics and unique atmosphere, also serves as a concert and exhibition hall in addition to religious purposes.
