Emperor Joseph II built the fortress and named it after his mother Maria Theresa. It developed into an important garrison town under the Habsburgs.

During the Second World War, Theresienstadt gained notoriety as a prison and a cruel concentration camp. Today Theresienstadt is a lively place of silent devotion.

After Theresienstadt also the composer Hans Krása was deported, who wrote the children's opera Brundibár. He had the opportunity to perform the opera 55 times in total. However, the roles had to be reoccupied frequently because children were murdered again and again.

Terezín was founded as a fortress at the end of the 18th century. The city, still surrounded by massive ramparts, is located near the confluence of the Elbe and Ohří rivers. Terezín's fortifications (Main and Small Fortress), modern for its time, gradually became obsolete and fell into oblivion after losing its military function.
It was only in the recent past that Terezín came to life again in the consciousness of our and the world public as a tragic symbol of the suffering of tens of thousands of innocent people who perished here during the Nazi occupation of our homeland.
