    Every urban history should include a chapter on the theater. Litoměřice have this chapter. The tradition of theater in it dates back to the Middle Ages. Today's building of the Municipal Theater of Karel Hynek Mácha can be proud of the epithet of the oldest stone building of the municipal theater in Bohemia. It was built by the architect Josef Gaub.

    The theater was inaugurated with a ceremonial performance on December 18, 1822. Until 1945, it was one of the most important German theaters in Bohemia. Only German was performed in the theater, and only from the mid-1920s, Czech was sometimes heard from its stage. Today, the Litoměřice theater is open to all troupes, amateur and professional, domestic and foreign.

    In 1945, the theater passed into Czech hands and became the Municipal Theater of K. H. Máchy. Between 1970 and 1991, it is reconstructed and reopened to the day after 169 years, on December 18, 1991.
