The Garden of Remembrance - also called Altstadtpark - is a city park designed by Dani Karavan in 1999 in the inner harbor of Duisburg. He is the most extensive project of the Land-Art-Artist in Germany.
In the immediate vicinity are the community center (synagogue) of the Jewish community Duisburg-Mülheim / Ruhr-Oberhausen, the Yitzhak-Rabin-Platz, the city wall with the Koblenzer tower, a senior center and the Duisburg Marina with the Buckelbrücke. Over the green area Kuhlenwall the Duisburg City can be reached on foot.
At the front the mosaic path, behind it the white ribbons of Dani Karavan, on the left the old Libra and behind the rock garden at the senior citizen residence In the three-hectare park, consciously worked out remnants of the former development (including Spar-Zentrale, Allgemeine Land- und Seetransport AG, Hermann Ludwig) were left to be used as venues or lookout towers (see the stairwell on the right). The ground plans of the demolished buildings were stylized by the typical for the artist Karavan white concrete tapes, the central path mosaic-like composed of the debris, modulated from the demolition remains of a triangular hill and a chaotic rock garden and worked out various water surfaces. The planting incorporates the remains of the building, so pine pines were planted on the lookout tower and Gleditschien in the Ludwigforum, the former hall floor. The former use of the area as a grain handling ("bread basket of the Ruhr area") is picked up by grain and sunflower fields and the scales in the middle of the park (see picture left). The park thus creates a connection between the industrial past and the culture and leisure-oriented future.
At night, the park is illuminated by the installation of lighting planners Belzner and Hofmann.
