In 2009, Pope Benedict XVI raised the Quirinus Minster to the status of "Basilica minor". In the Middle Ages, Neuss was an important stop on the way to Santiago. Much of the cathedral was destroyed by fire and bombs, but evidence such as the altar and an inscription on the Quirinus shrine attest to its significant history.
