Inverness Castle overlooks the River Ness from a sandstone cliff and affords fine views over the ancient and picturesque city of Inverness. The castle’s position, bridging the mouth of the river as it enters the Moray Firth, has ensured its place at the centre of political, religious and mercantile life in the Highlands for the best part of two millennia. The site is free to explore during daylight hours. There is a viewpoint that you can pay more to see, though.
In 1836, the architect William Burn built the red sandstone building on the site of an 11th-century fortress. Today it houses the Sheriff Court of Inverness. For many centuries there was a castle on this site. The castle itself is currently not open to the public, but an initiative has recently led to the creation of a working group to examine the extent to which this will be possible in the future. In April 2017, the North Tower was opened to the public as a vantage point. Currently, only this tower and the castle grounds can be visited

Beautiful vantage point, unfortunately the castle is currently not accessible due to construction work.

The end (or beginning) of the Great Glen Way - however, it does not make a big fuss about the way it ends here, making it a quiet, devout arrival.

The castle is used for public functions and is therefore not open to the public. On the left side of the castle there are beautiful views over the city, the official lookout balustrade is rather disappointing due to the very uninspiring architecture of the buildings in front of it.

From the area in front of the castle you have a nice view over the River Ness and the city.

History right in the middle of town. You've got to walk around it at least once and read the plaques along the way to see just how this place figures in Scottish history. Well worth a few minutes of your time.

Inverness Castle is a grand red sandstone building, overlooking the River Ness. The first castle on this site was constructed in 1057, but it has been destroyed and rebuilt many times since then. Today’s structure dates from 1836, and it currently houses Inverness Sheriff and Justice of the Peace Court. Although most of the castle is closed to the public, the north tower is accessible as a viewpoint. There are plans to open up more of the building in future.

At the moment it is unfortunately partly nested wg. construction work And when I got to the top, there was no access either.
