"The Buddenbrookhaus in Mengstraße 4 opposite Marienkirche looks back on an eventful history: Built in 1758 by Johann Michael Croll, a businessman from Marburg, the house was acquired in 1841 by Johann Siegmund Mann, the grandfather of Heinrich and Thomas Mann. It remained in the possession of the Mann family until 1891. In 1893, the Hanseatic city of Lübeck took over the building and rented it in the following years. For example, the house, which became famous through literature, housed the cadastral office, a night station of the Lantern Guardians and the Lübeck State Lottery Opening of the "Buddenbrook Bookstore" in 1922, where Thomas Mann was present, the house was once to be made accessible to literature.

During the night of Palm Sunday 1942, more than a fifth of Lübeck's historic old town was destroyed by bombing by the British Air Force. From Buddenbrookhaus only the facade and the vaulted cellar remained. In 1954, a bank bought the destroyed building and built a new building behind the old façade, where it opened a branch in 1957.

The Buddenbrook House, which had become world famous through the novel Thomas Mann, returned to the Hanseatic City of Lübeck in 1991 with the support of the Federal Republic of Germany and the Land of Schleswig-Holstein. Behind the historic façade was a modern Heinrich and Thomas Mann Center, the "born place" for a lively exploration of the life and work of the brothers.
Today, a permanent exhibition on the ground floor teaches the visitor about the relationship between the brothers and their hometown Lübeck. On the first floor and in the vaulted cellar there are temporary exhibitions, conferences, film and video presentations as well as readings. A research area with library and EDP to support those interested in Heinrich and Thomas Mann with words and deeds is under construction. The Buddenbrookhaus is now a memorial and offers two exhibitions.
The house gets its outstanding importance from the fact that it has entered world literature by providing the setting for the novel Buddenbrooks.
