The Fählensee is the third largest mountain lake in the canton of Appenzell and lies in a very narrow valley cut between the Berggasthof Bollenwees and the Zwinglipass, nestled between Hundsteingrat and Roslen-Saxer-First.
Just beautiful. Highly recommended!

The best time to see this lake is when the sun is high in the sky.
The Fälensee is located in a hollow completely surrounded by very high and very close peaks, which prevent the arrival of direct light when the sun is rising or setting.
Easy to reach via a simple path from the Sämtisersee, but my advice is to go up to Furgglenfirst and hike to the ridge to Saxer Lücke and then down to the lake.

The Fälensee in winter, hidden under ice and snow, is very special even then.
The sun hardly likes to go at this time of the year. The Bollenwees restaurant is closed. So everything in deep hibernation ... but with not too much snow anyway, or even more so, worth a tour. Then you are practically all alone here and on the move ...
