The Fählensee is the third largest mountain lake in the canton of Appenzell and lies in a very narrow valley cut between the Berggasthof Bollenwees and the Zwinglipass, nestled between Hundsteingrat and Roslen-Saxer-First.
    Just beautiful. Highly recommended!

The best time to see this lake is when the sun is high in the sky.
The Fälensee is located in a hollow completely surrounded by very high and very close peaks, which prevent the arrival of direct light when the sun is rising or setting.
Easy to reach via a simple path from the Sämtisersee, but my advice is to go up to Furgglenfirst and hike to the ridge to Saxer Lücke and then down to the lake.

Nice view of the lake, which has a shelter attached, great place to relax a little.
The path to get there does not require equipment.

The Fälensee in winter, covered by ice and snow. The sun hardly likes this time of year. The Bollenwees restaurant is closed. So everything in deep hibernation ... but with not too much snow anyway, or even more worth a tour. Then you are practically alone here and on the road ...

Wonderful view of the Fählensee which could also be a Norwegian fjord. Junction of many hiking routes. Highlight in the Alpstein.

In its small valley incision, surrounded by high mountain ridges, the Fählensee lies quiet and black on cloudy days. On sunny days, the beauties of the Alpstein are reflected in it and make the hike here a worthwhile experience.

This is the 'hardest' lake to reach in the Alpstein in terms of walking time, but it's absolutely worth it!
