Bike Touring Highlight
In August 1990, the pygmy hippopotamus Elsbeth escaped the toadstool circus who was visiting Fürth and hid at Wiesengrund on the Pegnitz. It was only a week later that Elsbeth was caught again after intensive efforts by the DLRG and the police. In the meantime, the hippopotamus had received a lot of local and national media attention.
The Fürth artist and sculptor Gudrun Kunstmann created a bronze sculpture of a miniature hippopotamus, but originally for the Nuremberg zoo. It was only because of the events in Fürth that the bronze figure came to Fürth on permanent loan. It was in the City Center until the end of 2016, but was returned to the Nuremberg zoo by the new owner P&P after it closed. In 2018, the sculpture came back to Fürth on permanent loan and has been at the Y-Haus on Wiesengrund, where Elsbeth was enjoying his freedom for a week.
