Altwindstein consists of two independent systems that lie on a common rock ridge that is approximately 160 meters long in a north-south direction and are separated by an artificially widened, 25-meter-long cutting.
The southern complex, also called the front castle, towers over a vertical cliff about 20 meters high, which is no longer accessible today. The front part cannot be visited. The rear castle is only suitable for experienced climbers and can only be visited by them.

Beautiful but only partially secured and restored castle ruins. The Windstein was a mighty castle complex with many chambers and passages carved into the red sandstone. So you can climb the front part via an underground access as a rock shaft. The rock massifs are also popular for climbing.
