Abbey Ruins of Bad Hersfeld

After a major fire in 1038, the new building began and the collegiate church was built. In 1761, when the French army withdrew, burned down the supplies they had piled up in the collegiate church. One of the largest sacred halls in Germany went up in flames and was almost completely destroyed.

The Katharinenturm only houses one bell today: the Lullus bell. As the inscription shows, it dates from 1038 and is Germany's oldest cast bell.

The Bad Hersfeld Festival takes place every year from mid-June to early August on the stage in the monastery ruins. It shows drama, musicals and theatrical performances etc.
