The Habsburgerplatz in Schwabing goes back to an open space regulation of the growing Munich in the 19th century. At that time, five percent of each building area had to be made available to the public as open space. This regulation gave rise to the form of the spacious, open jewelry space that still exists today.

The striking geometry of the elongated square underlines the arrangement of the chestnuts, additionally emphasized by a large lawn bed in between. Bulbs transform the bed, which is surrounded by gravel, into a carpet of flowers in spring, but allow you to lie, sit and play in summer. The benches are protected in the niches between the tree trunks.

The restrained design with simple shapes and few elements emphasizes the play of shadows and the seasons of the old chestnuts. Along Friedrichstrasse you will find the monument to the Pakistani poet Muhammad Iqbal and the rippling Kindlbrunnen by Anton Hiller.

At the southwest corner of the square is a post-war residential building by the Munich architect Sep Ruf, who also had his office on the top floor for a number of years (Franz-Joseph-Strasse 26). The southern façade is finely structured, typical of Ruf, appears cheerful and light, and is still a fresh impetus in the cityscape today. The similar predecessor building is on Theresienstraße opposite the Brandhorst Collection.
