Like the small cleaning ponds, the large cleaning ponds are used to irrigate the area around the former sewage fields in the Bucher Forest (Hobrechtswald). The water is stored here and drained into the newly created forest in a controlled manner. The ponds and the entire Lietzengraben system are fed by the Schönerlinde sewage treatment plant.
