Largest viaduct at its time, built from local rock in 1879

  • If you have passed the viaduct and have this view, you are just past Herdecke and still has a small distance at the Harkotsee until the weather. In Herdecke, the Ruhr promenade has been beautifully redesigned and invites you to linger or the Café Extrablatt. In the weather are then again cafes until it then continues quieter on the Ruhr.

  • An old structure. It was destroyed in the 2nd World War by the tidal wave of Möhnesee. The dam was broken by aerial bombs and the tidal wave had dire consequences.

  • On this river side you drive through the viaduct. Highly recommended, but not so frequented from this site.

  • The bridge is a great photo opportunity. Man feels somehow relegated back in time. If now a steam locomotive would roll over it, the time jump would be perfect. ;O)

  • In any case, one of the most interesting buildings in the region is the Ruhr Viaduct. At the beginning of the Hakortsee, the railroad tracks cross the Ruhr at a length of over 300 meters at a height of 30 meters. The 12 arches with a span of 20 meters make up the remarkable picture of the viaduct inaugurated in 1879 - a technical masterpiece of its time, which has lost nothing of its fascination for its observers to this day.
The building, which is still endangered by gull (scooping out) on the piers, suffered badly during World War II and could not be used again until 1957. A good view of the Ruhr viaduct can be had from the shore of the Hakortsee - or from the water.
