The Greeks Beisl is one of the oldest restaurants in Vienna. According to the legend, the "Dear Augustin", a Viennese banker, bagpiper and impromptu poet, made music here. In 1679 he is said to have been found lying on the street after extensive carousing and to have been thrown into a plague pit near the church of St. Ulrich. When he gave another sign of life, they took him out and continued his life. He is remembered by an Augustin figure sitting under the doormat at the entrance to the pub, with money to be thrown in his hat.

“Griechenbeisl” since 1447
The “Griechenbeisl” has been entertaining guests for 550 years. It had many names, from the “Gasthaus zum gelber Adler” to the “goldenen Engel”. It was only when Greek traders settled in the area that the inn, or “Beisl” in Viennese, got its name.Where today the subtle music of a zither player delights guests, in the seventeenth century a ballad singer and bagpiper performed, whose story and song every Viennese child knows: dear Augustin. He fell into a plague pit on the way home, probably drunk on alcohol, and survived the accident unscathed. Such a “pit” at the entrance to the Griechenbeisl commemorates this.
For many centuries the Griechenbeisl was a meeting place for artists, scholars and politicians who at some point began to immortalize themselves on the vaulted ceiling in one of the guest rooms, later known as the “Mark Twain Room”. This is how the largest autograph book in the city was created quite spontaneously. Our guests are cordially invited to admire the autographs of Karl Lueger, Count Bismarck, Egon Schiele and Johnny Weissmüller. The inn has 5 guest rooms (Round Room, Zither Room, Karlsbad Room, Music Room and Mark Twain Room) on the ground floor and another 3 guest rooms (Hunting Room, Candle Room and Biedermeier Room) on the first floor, which can also be rented for groups.
The cuisine is traditional Viennese with classics such as Wiener Schnitzel or roast beef, with seasonal delicacies such as game from the Waldviertel and delicious desserts such as Kaiserschmarrn. Vegetarians will also find a selection of delicacies on the menu
