When Erik Zabel was still active, this route was once part of the Germany tour. Nevertheless, it is one of the more moderate climbs in the northern Black Forest and the slope is very even. So it can be cycled up wonderfully smoothly. It is exactly 5.9 kilometers from the church in Bad Rippoldsau to the sign for Zwieselberg. And when you reach this place name sign you have made the altitude difference. Most will continue to Freudenstadt, from Zwieselberg it is a slight up and down, you actually stay at the same height the whole time until the junction to Schömberg am Lauferbrunnen.

As a small motivation boost, the small L404 signs help, because they also indicate the kilometers from the Bad Rippoldsau church. And so you can easily see that when you reach the first hairpin, you have already covered more than two kilometers, i.e. a good third.

Nice route, little traffic (at least when I was driving there).

I'd recommend it more as a climb. While you do have to pedal quite a bit, the gradient is nice and moderate, and the traffic remains manageable.

You should be more careful on the descent, as there are some nasty road defects, especially in the curves.
