St. Remigius Church and Marian Grotto, Leidingen

St. Remigius ChurchThe previous church of today's church had become too small in the 16th century. The interior was probably only four by eight meters. For this reason, an enlargement was made in 1530, with the addition of a new church tower, which is still standing today. In addition, during the construction work, the east orientation of the church, with the tower in the west, was changed to one towards the south, where the tower is now attached to the side of the nave. In 1742 the entire nave was renewed and the tower was given its current dome. Until 1936, the church of St. Remigius was also used by the residents of the French district of Leiding (the state border between Germany and France runs through Leidingen). At the top, on the edge of a hillside, the German parish church of St. Remigius impresses with its onion dome, atypical for the region. The dome dates from 1742, the lower part from 1550. Like the first church built around 1030, the present parish church served as the focal point for the villages of Leidingen, Heiningen, Sermlingen, Schrecklingen, and Wölfingen. Its nave is a simple hall with three window axes and a narrow, three-sided chancel. The older tower, added to the west side of the nave, gives the church an asymmetrical and interesting appearance.
