    St. Jeanne d'Arc Church, Leidingen

The church "L'église St. Jeanne d'Arc" was built between 1934 and 1939, as a result of the Saar referendum, for the French-speaking Leidingers, who had previously attended St. Remigius on the German side. The reasons for its construction alone make St. Jeanne d'Arc Church an exceptional historical monument. It exemplifies the rare type of modernist church building, whose architecture was influenced by the waning of Expressionism. Why this exclusively urban style adorns a building in the countryside will remain a mystery. Situated high on a slope above the village, the church, with its reinforced concrete skeleton construction, is an architectural masterpiece. A perfect fusion of modern design and landscape, it overlooks the valley, steeped in history despite its relatively young age. Joan of Arc, known in German-speaking countries as "Joan of Orleans" (1412? to 1431), was an important figure in French history during the so-called Hundred Years' War between the kingdoms of England and France. After her capture, she was condemned as a heretic (at the instigation of the English) and burned at the stake. However, two and a half decades later (at the instigation of the French), this sentence was overturned. She is the patron saint of France.
The music group OMD (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark) dedicated a song to her in the early 1980s: "Maid of Orleans." Available on YouTube here:
