In front of the dikes of Schleswig-Holstein, on the North Frisian Halligen and on the coast of Nordstrand there are over 10,000 hectares of salt marshes, a unique habitat shaped by the salt of the North Sea. The plants and animals living here are specially adapted to the high salt content. The salt marshes are one of the main breeding areas for coastal birds. Over 100,000 breeding pairs are counted every year. Guided tours through the salt marshes are offered on Nordstrand.
