When this path opened in 2019, I first researched what a Ganerbe [gaan-erbe] actually is: According to Old High German inheritance law, a Ganerbschaft was the joint family property, primarily real estate, over which the heirs could only dispose jointly. "Gan" meant "common" or "shared" in Old High German.

Interestingly, the term "ganerbe" was already used by Wolfram von Eschenbach in his verse romance Parzival around 1200. However, the legal form of Ganerbschaft seems to date back even further. Historically documented Ganerbschaften exist from the 13th century onwards; a well-known example is Eltz Castle on the Moselle River.

A very beautiful circular hiking trail in the Ganerben forest district (part of the Freinsheim municipality) marked with a black axe on a yellow background. It partially follows the Leistadt Historical Circular Trail and passes Ungeheuersee (Monster Lake) and the Bismarck Tower. Quite crowded on weekends!
