There was already a water mill here before 1640, but the current mill is the result of a rebuilding in 1650. The building is made of white marlstone. The mill was shut down in 1960. In 1981 the mill was declared a protected monument and the surroundings a protected village. The mill was restored from 2013 to 2016.

In the mill house is a plaque with a chronogram in the text:
ALL THAT IS RIGHTEOUS FROM LIFE AND GOD WILL BLESS HERE AND LIVE HERE TO THE EWEG

The Neerkanne mill, today known as the Smokkelmolen, is a former water mill (corn mill) on the Jeker that today serves as a B&B. The name Smokkelmolen comes from the fact that the mill is so close to the Netherlands. The complex consists of two superimposed (white) marlstone buildings under gable roofs, dated to 1650 by recent wall anchors (17th century, wrought iron wall anchors). The arched windows with rectangular wooden frames also date from the same period.

There is a gable stone under a drip molding and flanked by columns, with chronogram "all that right Lord/ DIg Is Van Lee/ Ven will God/ here his sea -/ give/ here to the/ Eternal Life", which indicates the year 1842 . It is suspected that this is a reused older stone that may refer to the modification of this facade.

In 2012, more than 400,000 euros were allocated for the restoration of the mill by the minister responsible for heritage at the time.

De Smokkelmolen has four guest rooms, for 2 to 4 people. The rooms are equipped with everything you could wish for. Good box springs, a sofa bed, sitting area, television and rain shower. Add breakfast to that and you don't want to go home. The organic breakfast consists of freshly baked loaves of stone-ground flour, jams from our own fruit, local cheeses and homemade charcuterie. Ending the day with a drink in the wine bar or a beer from the region with a tasting of your own delicacies on the snack board is also a very good idea. On cold days the wood stove is lit for you and in summer you can find a place on the sunny terrace by the water. Delicious!

The watermill has been restored and generates 100% sustainable energy. On Sunday afternoon, traditional grain is ground, from which the tastiest breads are made for your breakfast. In addition to sustainable energy, the Smokkelmolen is run as sustainably as possible.
