Regardless of how many paths, lanes, avenues and other sunken roads may come together here, this place is known as the Zevenster. And in the middle lie those famous stones. They also have a name: together they form the Dolmen Stone of Duisburg. More specifically, it concerns three remaining fragments of that Dolmen Stone which originally, in an unbroken state, had a diameter of around 2m45. The stone (a chunk of quartzite or compressed sandstone) was excavated in 1883 in a field in nearby Duisburg. Residents initially thought it was an impacted meteorite which was then given the name "dry thunderstone". After quite a bit of discussion, it is now assumed that it is polishing stones. No remains of a megalithic monument, although various artefacts from the Stone Age have been found in the Sonian Forest. The stone was not broken when it was found. This happened during the transport to the Warandepark or the Warande (Tervuren park) here, where it was brought by horse and cart in 1897 and was a showpiece at the world exhibition - although the 267 Congolese who were forcibly brought to Belgium to be exhibited as animals in a zoo that same year - probably received more attention. The Zevenster itself is of course a bit of a special place with all those avenues and paths that come together. You can enjoy it on various benches, also a picnic bench and 'wooden throne'. The Zevenster is not that old, by the way. In the past, it was completely laid out here in a checkerboard pattern. The redevelopment of the Warande, with a star-shaped instead of checkerboard pattern, came under Karel van Lorraine in the eighteenth century. Quote: "The Warande itself also received a thorough facelift and the original checkerboard pattern was changed to a star-shaped layout, with the various avenues coming together in the 'Zevenster'."
