The park was originally created in the 19th century by order of King Leopold II of Belgium, who used it as a royal domain. The park was designed by the famous French landscape architect Louis Fuchs, who was also involved in the creation of other royal parks in Europe. It was part of the extension of Tervuren Castle, which itself played an important role in the history of the Belgian royal family. The park has a rich history and was originally intended for the royal family as a private domain, but is now open to the public.
