In 1847 the line of the Cöln-Minden railway was opened, in 1856 a freight station was built here to connect the Pluto mine. The first passenger station was put into operation in 1864, from which the present station was created in 1913. With the opening of further railway lines to Münster, Essen, Bochum and Dorsten, Wanne-Eickel developed into a railway hub of national importance. Even after the merger of Wanne-Eickel and Herne, the main station kept its name.More info: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wanne-Eickel_Hauptbahnhof
