The forest chapel was first mentioned in 1270 as a pilgrimage chapel of the St. Märgen monastery. In 1897 it was moved from the northern to the southern side of the street due to increasing traffic. The chapel used to be a popular pilgrimage destination on the so-called "Hail Friday" after Ascension Day, which was supposed to commemorate a severe storm.
