Extending over five kilometres, this nature reserve forms a magnificent plateau of high stubble. Exposed to the winds between 1,200 and 1,300 meters above sea level, these moors do not allow vegetation to develop and create a landscape of typical Vosges shrubs. On its eastern slope, a ditch forms, offering magnificent views overlooking the four lakes.

The Gazon du Faing (German: Rossberg) is a mountain on the main ridge of the southern Vosges, which here forms the border between the departments of Haut-Rhin (Upper Alsace) and Vosges and thus between the historic regions of Alsace and Lorraine. The mountain has a height of 1302 meters[2]. It lies west of Lac Noir (German: Schwarzer See) and east of the Route des Crêtes (Vosgeskammstraße) in the Ballons des Vosges Regional Nature Park.

The Gazon de Faing is 1,302 meters high and is one of the ten highest peaks in the Vosges. It drops steeply on the Alsace side, forming rugged rock faces and rocky outcrops. Lac Noir lies at the foot of the Gazon du Faing. A few meters north of the Gazon du Faing, the plateau is deepened by water holes in which there is permanent water, and a high moor landscape has formed.
Translated, Gazon means meadow or lawn, as practically no trees grow here at over 1,250 meters above sea level, only shrubs, herbs and meadow.
