The Virgin's Cave might at first appear to be a somewhat harmless cave, but it hides a dark secret: during excavations, the bone remains of at least forty people were found (many children, some women, two men), who were most likely victims of a cult celebration around 5100 BC.
The so-called Black Cross, which stands nearby, commemorates these dead.

The cave is actually no more than you can see here, because it goes down about 2m deep ... but the beautiful beech forest and the mossy rocks, the cave is definitely worth planning on the hike.

The horror story on the information board is a real eye-opener. It's a shame that important and exciting details are missing. I don't know of any other cult cave in Franconia where such a find has been made.
