Bike Touring Highlight
Waiting for the river, the Dutch artist group Observatory has created a very special work. Presented for the first time at the first issue of Emscherkunst in the Capital of Culture year RUHR.2010 on Emscher Island, the sculpture has quickly become a crowd pleaser of the exhibition and will be located in summer 2016 near the large water cross of Emscher and Rhein-Herne-Kanal in Castrop- Rauxel shown again. The approximately 38-meter-long, covered bridge sculpture is divided by three pavilions. Its zigzag shape allows a wide panorama of the surrounding landscape from the large windows and creates small courtyards between the pavilions. Waiting for the river conceptually and functionally sees itself as a "built proposal": until the new Emschertal becomes reality in 2020, this bridge with its lounges will serve "productive waiting", because the renatured Emscher will be located exactly at its location in the future flow. Waiting for the river is therefore still a "sleeping bridge".
